Name of church: Camelback Bible Church
City: Paradise Valley (basically Phoenix)
Website: www.cbcaz.org
What's the worship music like? (Contemporary, hymns, long, fast, loud etc?): Both! The 9am service is contemporary with a hymn thrown in every now and then, and the 10:40am is traditional with a few contemporary songs. 9am is louder, 10:40am is more conservative.
What's the speaking like? (Old school Bible, culturally relevant, by video etc?): Awesome. Straight from the Bible AND culturally relevant. Pastor Savage is a great teacher, as are the other pastors who will occasionally teach in service.
What's the childcare like?: Spectacular. Seriously. I grew up at this church. The workers are so loving, and you learn so much. It laid a great foundation for who I am today. The nursery is also amazing. The woman who heads it up--phenomenal.
What's your favorite thing?: Working with the Wednesday night kid's club, LOGOS throughout the school year. It's so awesome to work with these kids and see them grow in Christ.
What would you change?: I would bring more young people in and start a young people's group. We have one, but it's mostly people over 30 and they are married. Also, there are a lot of wealthy people in the church, and I feel that sometimes it would be better to bring more "normal" people in to shake it up and make some changes in the community.
Can I wear jeans?: Yep! At least at the 9am you can. 10:40am some older ladies might look at you funny ;)

Name of church: Paradise Valley United Methodist Church
City: Paradise Valley
Website: pvumc.org
What's the worship music like? 8:00 - Old School Hymns
9:30 - Slightly cooler, much fancier hymns
11:00 - Praise songs
What's the speaking like? Culturally relevant, meaningful sermons. Senior Pastor gives context and meaning to the scripture verses, and makes it make sense and makes it relevant. It's hard to fall asleep during the sermon, and I get excited to start the rest of the week.
What's the childcare like? It's great, there are a lot of kids there and its first-rate child care
What's your favorite thing? I like the people, the amazing pastors, and the small groups that recognize that different people have different needs (not all 20 somethings are college students, not all 30 somethings are parents, etc)
What would you change? I'm happy as a clam there, my husband would like to see it a little more personalized, intimate perhaps
Can I wear jeans? The dress is all over the place. You'll be more comfortable in jeans at the contemporary service at 11, but there are plenty of people in jeans at 9:30 (and a girl who wear s a "Libraries are for Lovers" t-shirt) but more people wear typical Sunday clothes.

Name of church: E3 Scottsdale

City: Scottsdale

Website: e3scottsdale.com

What's the worship music like? Contemporary, sometimes acoustic, sometimes rocky - check out our worship leader here.

What's the speaking like? Relevant messages you can apply to your daily life. We have two pastors, so the speaking style varies.

What's the childcare like? We're meeting in a theater, so we really have to focus on keeping the kids occupied the whole time. It's an age-appropriate curriculum with the focus on how much God loves us, with lots of hands-on activity.

What's your favorite thing? Our people are great. All of my best friends attend this church!

What would you change? We're currently meeting in a movie theater, and that's kind of challenging. I hate having to break down and get out quickly after service. We always encourage people to come at 9:30 AM (service starts at 10 AM) so we can chat then. There is no chat time after service (for those of us on the tear-down team)!

Can I wear jeans? Yes. Shorts, too. Leave your Easter bonnet at home. :)

Name of church: Christ Life Church

City: Tempe, AZ (Phoenix)

Website: christlifechurch.org

What's the worship music like? (Contemporary, hymns, long, fast, loud etc?): Mainly popular contemporary praise and worship (Hillsong, Israel, etc.), but we'll throw a hymn in there every now and then. It can be loud, but not unreasonably so. We sing about four songs a Sunday.

What's the speaking like? (Old school Bible, culturally relevant, by video etc?): Bible-based, relevant, entertaining and life-changing.

What's the childcare like?: Christ Life Kidz is amazing! And Vacation Bible School rocks!

What's your favorite thing?: The people and the church's diversity.

What would you change?: Longer worship and even more diverse music styles.

Can I wear jeans?: The pastor, worship team and I do. You might as well!

What's the speaking like?: Two words: Awe some. Our pastor is an incredibly gifted speaker. Gets right to the point.
What's the childcare like?: Awesome again. Well organized. We are working on a new system to check kids in that will make it evern easier.
What's your favorite thing?:We are a church for messy people trying to love Jesus.
What would you change?: I would add a young married small group (which I might be doing).
Can I wear jeans?:You certainly can.

Oh, I have good memories of Logos... I went to Camelback as a little girl, and I got to go to logos with a friend when I was in sixth grade. Good teaching, fun games, good fellowship with dear friends. I remember how our group's leader really cared for the girls. I'm in college now, and I still remember parts of the talks. Ooh, and now I remember a night when we went to the kitchen and we got to cook a Mexican dinner together! Really wonderful year!

Name of church: Sovereign Grace Church
City: Gilbert
Website: www.sovgracechurch.com
What's the worship like? The worship is really contemporary, and it's fairly long. Depending on the morning, it can be pretty fast-paced and loud, or slower and quieter, I guess it depends on who is leading that morning.
What's the speaking like? It is really great, very Gospel/Cross-centered, and completely applicable to our culture and daily life.
What's the childcare like? It's fun, and the kids get loads of good teaching. I almost don't feel like I'm missing the sermon when I help back there, it's so good :).
What's your favorite thing? There's the youth group small groups called caregroups, where we meet to talk about how God's been working in our lives, and where we need help. It's such an encouragement to me, and I appreciate our pastors' desire that we have a strong personal relationship with God, beyond sermons& youth group events.
What would you change? I'd love to see more big, church events where we get together to fellowship and have fun. We used to do this more often, and it was a blast.
Can I wear jeans? Jeans?? what are those? jk, the pastors wear them :)

Name of church: Palm Valley Church

City: Goodyear,AZ (suburb of Phoenix)

Website: www.palmvalley.org

What's the music like? Contemporary. The worship team is awesome.

What's the preaching like? Culturally relevant, personally challenging and always Biblical. Pastor Greg is an amazing pastor who is refreshingly transparent, a man who loves his family, loves the Lord and is dedicated to reaching our community for Christ. The church has been reading through the Bible this year (our "Route 66" campaign)and it's been awesome!

What's the childcare like? Birth-5th grade has an awesome check-in system for safety. Lots of time and effort are put into the k-12 ministries. In K-5, they have video teaching, live skits, team games, off the hook worship and small group Bible study. Some kids stay 2-3 services and love every minute of it! 6-12th grade has their own services with a student worship band and youth pastors who preach. They also have a hang-out room to chill with friends and adult mentors.

What's your favorite thing? Palm Valley is all about doing life together, good and bad times. There are so many opportunities to connect with people who want to help you grow in your relationship with Christ. Through small home Bible studies called Home Teams, new believers classes, Celebrate Recovery, Care Ministry and Volunteer ministry there are chances to build authentic relationships and serve the community.

What would you change? We're a portable church currently meeting at a high school and running 5 services, 2 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday. That means when it's 115 degrees outside we have volunteers who are hauling chairs, lighting rigs, and crates of supplies without complaining. We have land and are almost to the point of building. I can't wait until we have our own space.

Can I wear jeans? Wear whatever you want. No one's going to look at you funny if you're in jeans or in a three piece suit. Come as you are.

City: Tucson

What's the worship music like? Contemporary, fast, loud
What's the speaking like? culturally relevant, sometimes by video, driven by the authority of the Bible
What's the childcare like? all ages, every service. Our nursery and education wing is brand new this year. There's spongy stuff under the carpets.
What's your favorite thing? The people (not just the staff) know what it's like to show up to a church for the first time. They give you a free Starbucks gift card and get to know you like a person, not a revenue stream.
What would you change? They're working on their video/slide production.
Can I wear jeans? That's a little formal. Try a pair of shorts and some sandals.

Name of church: University Lutheran

City: Tempe

Website: www.ulctempe.org

What's the worship music like? (Contemporary, hymns, long, fast, loud etc?) Mostly traditional, with the rare praise-song once every now and again. Wednesday night service is contemporary.

What's the speaking like? (Old school Bible, culturally relevant, by video etc?) Culturally relevant, but also old-school Bible. Not by video, that's for sure! It's a smaller church, with an intimate format for teaching and preaching. Pr McCluskey often preaches a socially-relevant message that encourages the churchgoers to GO and LISTEN and ACT for Jesus. In short: depending on when you're here, it can be either "old school" Bible teaching or more social ministry, but it is always interesting and thought-provoking.

What's the childcare like? Sunday school during the academic year, no childcare at this time. There are a lot of kids, and we are used to them being a part of the service!

What's your favorite thing? The honesty and openness of the people there. ULC is an Evangelical Lutheran Church of America church that is affiliated with the Reconciling in Christ movement, and consequently is open to all, regardless of race, sexuality, social standing, or general place in the world, which gives us a unique and diverse community. We're located about an eighth of a mile from Arizona State University, so we have a huge university community, with everyone from students to grad students to faculty. This is a church you can always go to, always ask a hard question, and always find someone you never expected to meet and are so glad you did.

What would you change? I'd like to see the adult Sunday school change a little; it's currently in a more "open forum" structure that focuses on different issues each week that vary from Christian perspectives on immigration to the war in Iraq to a study on the purpose and history of corporate worship. I'd like it to be more of a traditional Bible study half of the time, and the open forum the other half.

Can I wear jeans? Yes. Definitely. And Chacos....this is Arizona, after all. Anything goes.

Whats the worship like?: Very contemporary, lots of Hillsong and Israel Houghton. Upbeat, very musically talented team.

Whats the speaking like?: Amazing. Relevant, bible based and driven. Straight forward, encouraging. Lots of media in the sermons.

Childcare: They have their own worship and praise team. Great kids pastor and volunteers. Younger kids have computer check in system and there are also hall monitors to make sure everyone is safe. Plus, all the rooms are just super cute :)

Favorite Thing: The worship and Sunday morning service. There are a lot of young people and familes that attend which is also great for the area.

What Would you change?: there is a new Young Adult service starting, which was much needed. I hope it grows.

Can I wear Jeans: Yes, even the pastor does!

What's your favorite thing? This church is meeting real needs of the people in the community. People are growing... the church is growing.
What would you change? I could do without the smoke machine. ( ;
Can I wear jeans? we all do!

Name: Praxis Church

City: Tempe, AZ

Website: www.praxischurch.com

Music: A bit of everything. We do hymns and contemporary music. Some songs our music leader writes himself (myspace.com/garthbostic).

Speaking: Justin goes straight through books of the Bible almost exclusively, and puts the things of the Bible into practical application. In a word, it's awesome.

Childcare: We do it so that the children are learning the same thing (more simplified, obviously) as the adults. We even bring the kids in to service to hear a couple of songs.

Favorite thing: We focus a lot on being a community that loves each other, but is also missional. We don't want to focus too much on fellowship, and lose evangelism, nor focus too much on evangelism and lose fellowship (either of which is a very easy trap to get into).

Change: There is no youth program, but we don't have many youth. We are growing, however.

Can I wear jeans: The pastor does!

Name: Palm Vista Baptist Church
City: Surprise (near West L.A.)
Website: Ummmm, idk.
Music: At the 11:00 service, rockin' loud guitar and drums extravaganza
Speaking: Brilliance personified
Childcare: We have childcare. The kids eat goldfish and hear Bible stories. I think they also have fun.
Favorite thing: The youth pastor frequently references glitter and unicorns. (Don't ask.)
What would I change: I would organize the church. Right now, it is lacking in infrastructure.
Jeans: Yeah, the pastor wears jeans with holes. I cal them "Holey jeans." Our Worship minister has a fauxhawk and also wears jeans. He has more hair product on his head than I do.
