What's the worship music like? (Contemporary, hymns, long, fast, loud etc?): 8am - hymns, 9:30 & 11am - Contemporary

What's the speaking like? (Old school Bible, culturally relevant, by video etc?) - Relevant, but in the style of a 50-something Baptist pastor.

What's the childcare like? Excellent - including check-in security.

What's your favorite thing? It truly is a church for anyone/everyone. We have all types and many have said they felt "at home" when they first visited.

What would you change? The sound system.

Can I wear jeans? Absolutely...unless you're on stage!

What's the worship music like?: More than "contemporary", it's a full hands-on experience for an audience of one!

What's the speaking like? It's carefully constructed to move you to respond--not tomorrow--but today. 95% of the time there is some way you can actually tangibly respond immediately.

What's the childcare like? We have services for children from birth through 8th Grade that run concurrent with our main service.

What's your favorite thing? Me! 2nd favorite thing would be the friendliness of the people.

What would you change? Not a thing!

Can I wear jeans? I will be preaching in them tomorrow!

Name of church: Grace Community

City: Tyler, TX

What's the worship music like? Contemporary, with a band. A mixture of old and new.

What's the speaking like? Grace is a multi-site church with 4 different sites. Each site has it's own campus pastor, but all the pastors speak on the same topic. They are have a different flavor and add personal touches to it. Right now the teaching is from Exodus. It's biblical and relevant.

What's childcare like? The children's program is why we keep going back. The Kingdom Kids program uses the Elevate curriculum from Willow Creek and my kids(10 and 7) love it. But they don't just love it. I see them putting the applications into practice throughout the week. That's one of the main reasons why we are still there.

Favorite thing: Kingdom Kidz

What would you change?: I would like to see more ministry to single parents. Seeing as I am one.

Can you wear jeans?: Of course.

What's the worship music like? (Contemporary, hymns, long, fast, loud etc?): Contemporary - lots of new stuff
What's the speaking like? (Old school Bible, culturally relevant, by video etc?) Relavant, and authentic, but totally Bible Based
What's the childcare like? Awesome! Sunday mornings are called Adventure Camp with a rugged, outdoor camp theme. Check-in/check-out security and currently using the Elevate Kids material from Fellowship Church.
What's your favorite thing? Real life, real community, casual atmosphere, serious faith (our motto and my favorite way to describe our church.)
What would you change? Where we meet - in a school.
Can I wear jeans? Definitely! Even the pastor and worship guys do.

(Note: The site is a little out of date, but a new version is being developed.)

What's the worship music like?
Mostly contemporary and a few hymns. (Here is a sample.) Our worship leader is not a metrosexual even though he does have a goatee, but he does like to play God's favorite sport. He is a very talented musician, although his real passion is evangelism.

What's the speaking like?
The pastor is a good speaker. He is more interested in making his sermons Biblically sound than culturally relevant.

What's the childcare like?
The childcare is sufficient. We're a small church, so no ball pit for the kids to play in. Our pastor's wife leads a children's class during Sunday School. Then during the worship service, we have a volunteer-lead time where the kids get another short lesson and an activity time.

What's your favorite thing?
It's hard to pick just one: friendly people, good teaching, great music, our staff's commitment to reaching our area for Christ.

What would you change?
Although the people are welcoming, I would like to see more of a sense of community.

Can I wear jeans?
Yep. See our "what to expect" section of the Web site for more questions like this.

Worship Music? 9:15 service is blended (sometimes there's a choir, but mostly a mix of hymns and contemporary). 11 a.m. service ROCKS. All contemporary songs, electric guitars, drums, totally fun. There's a Saturday night service, too, but I haven't been in 8 years.

Speaking? You are almost guaranteed to hear the gospel presented each week. But the pastor also shares stories from his life -- he's quite transparent. He goes through books of the Bible, but it feels more topical.

Childcare: Very, very good. The kids are on a rotation so they move from room to room for music, Bible story, etc.

Favorite Thing? The Homebuilders ABF. We say ABF (Adult Bible Fellowship) instead of Sunday School class. The ABFs become a mini-church of sorts.

I'd change? The women's ministry caters to the older crowd. But our ABF has women's events.

Jeans? Absolutely. At the 11 o'clock service the pastor doesn't wear a tie and occasionally wears jeans himself.

What's the worship music like? Contemporary - and we put the drummers in a fishbowl.

What's the speaking like? I like it because it's a great balance of being theologically sound AND relevant.

What's the childcare like? I have very little experience with this, but from what I can tell, we have a pretty organized children's ministry.

What's your favorite thing? Hmm. I like that it's non-denominational, not legalistic, and has sound Biblical teaching.

What would you change? The singles' ministry!!!

Can I wear jeans? Yep. Many of the people on stage wear jeans, too. But, you can dress up if want as well.

Size? It's definitely growing and I don't know the number of people, but I'd totally guess about 3000. We aren't a mega church like Fellowship or Lakewood, but it's not small.

Additional comment: My parents, including my dad, who is a relatively new believer and who regularly attends a small, country church, LOVE to visit me so that they can go to my church. I'm telling you, this is a huge endorsement. :)

Note on Austin Stone:
Child care, "Kidstuff," is not your typical children's Sunday school class. It is a worship service for kids complete with a band, skits and word followed by small group time.

Favorite thing: Genuine attitude in sermons, relevant and challenging messages that are convicting but exciting and uplifting. Tons of college students but also all ages. Members, called "partners," are fun and easygoing, not afraid to joke around, but serious about their faith and biblical truth.

What's the worship music like? Very contemporary, rock band style; long, usually fast, and full of excitement

What's the speaking like? Our pastor is always really excited about whatever he talks about. Right now, we're going through Luke chapter by chapter, but topics vary from books to themes. Always has lots of application.

What's the childcare like? Great! (slightly biased since I used to help with it) Individual classes by age, lots of activities, lots of volunteers helping, and good security

What's your favorite thing? It's focused on really training people to grow and take on bigger roles like small group leaders or church planters; it wants to see people grow personally & see the church reach out & grow

What would you change? Maybe I'd want slightly shorter services. They tend to be almost 2 hours.

Can I wear jeans? Definitely - the praise band generally does, as well as many people involved with the service. But you can dress up if you want, there are always people that do.

What's the worship music like? Contemporary worship, usually lasts 20-30 minutes. Full band.
What's the speaking like? Our pastor, Pete Briscoe, has a very Word-based style. He's quite funny, so he's easy to listen to, but he really knows how to drive a point home. He's very relational, and even answers his own e-mail (impressive, in my mind, considering the size of the church). It's a really big church, so getting plugged in is vitally important. Life groups (or cell groups, or small groups, whatever you care to call them) are a big component of community life. BTBF strives, at every level, to be relevant and more important, to be real. Not fakey Christians, but real, maturing disciples of Christ.
What's the childcare like? Childcare, including security, is awesome. They've just finished renovations, and the children's wing is in the final stages, but they're going to have murals painted on the walls to draw children in. Workers genuinely love children and seem to be happy providing care for younger ones and lesson/growth for older ones. My kids are 1 & 3, so they're just really getting into it--I don't have any insight into ages older than that.
What's your favorite thing? I love that I look forward to going to church because I know I'll come away feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and strengthened for the week to come.
What would you change? I'd make it closer to my house. :)
Can I wear jeans? Absolutey.

Extemporaneous preaching. John Piper is a big influence and will be speaking here in October.
Nursery for 0-5, Children's Church is a Sovereign Grace curriculum and starts just before the sermon. AWANAS during the school year. Excellent Youth program, career youth leader (not a stepping stone for interns).
What's your favorite thing? MY favorite thing is the Youth Group, really.
What would you change? Partly the music (see, something for everyone to hate), partly the resistance to changing the "traditional" feel to something more useful to today's generation.
Can I wear jeans? ABSOLUTELY. OR a suit. No matter what you wear, someone will hate it. Like the music. My husband, sons and oldest daughter all wear jeans and I do sometimes, although usually my 2 youngest daughters and I like to wear coordinating dresses. (rollsyes)

What's the worship music like?
Some might call it "blended", but we don't think that term quite fits. The worship varies week to week and fuses together ancient and modern music with liturgies and other creative interactive aspects to fully give life to the week's scripture. We have busted out some super old school Gregorian chants and also sing some David Crowder. One time we sang while we built a brick wall during the service. It seriously can be something entirely different every week. If you are looking for a consistent or traditional style, it might not be your fav, but if you want to connect with God, I think you'll find a place here.

What's the speaking like?
The pastor is great at bringing the scripture to life and he asks challenging questions for the congregation to ponder about how to apply it personally and as a church community. He is a young buckaroo with lots of energy.

What's the childcare like?
There is a nursery for younger children during the service. Children are encouraged to join the family for most of worship, but before the sermon they can go to kid's church.

What's your favorite thing?
Can I cheat and list two things? 1. St. Luke's is currently a portable church and I think that has helped the church love and focus on the people of the city rather than the people focusing on the church.
2. St. Luke's has a solid core of leaders (staff and members) with a vision to not just be a typical church congregation, but an active part of transforming the community. They are willing to take risks and reach out in ways that may not seem to have much reward on the surface and spend a long time in prayer before going about it.

What would you change?
I wish there were more youth involved in the church. That has been a challenge from the start and although the church has tried some creative outreach for youth, not much has worked yet.

Can I wear jeans?
You can wear jeans, shorts, sandals, a hat, a nineties plaid shirt, a suit, or even a tux. We don't really care. Please no birthday suits though...

What's the worship music like? Contemporary, full band, pretty loud (but well balanced), freedom to worship however you like. Some stand, some kneel, some raise their hands, some don't. Like I said, worship as you feel led.

What's the speaking like? Mostly verse-by-verse through various books in the Bible. Every few months we'll take a break and do something more topical. Regardless, it's always relevant.

What's the childcare like? Amazing. Kids' services are awesome as well.

What's your favorite thing? The authenticity.

What would you change? Need more parking.

Can I wear jeans? Yep. Even if they have holes in them. Or shorts. Our pastor is a jeans and untucked button-down kind of guy. It's very much "come as you are."

What's the worship music like?

Too loud for the older crowd (first comment out of the blocks at town hall meetings.) but rocks with a multitude of talented folks.

What's the speaking like?

Pastor personal vow - never to repeat a sermon. Bringing truth from scripture for where ever you are on your spiritual path. You won't be checking your watch!

What's the childcare like?

Adventure land rocks - great creativity with activities, large group, worship, and small groups.

What's your favorite thing?

Church tagline: Church like you always wanted it to be. I think Jon Acuff could last here for a month.

What would you change?

More space, and more volunteers that 'get' ministry.

Can I wear jeans?

If you wear a tie, you are a visitor. I saw a lot of Hawaiian shirts today, but I don't think my wife is buying me any very soon.

I'm told that socks with sandals are taboo here.

What's the worship music like? (Contemporary, hymns, long, fast, loud etc?): Contemporary band plays it all- spices some up (best doxology EVER) and leaves the greats alone (you can't make Come Thou Fount any better so don't try)
What's the speaking like? (Old school Bible, culturally relevant, by video etc?): Culturally relevant old school Bible
What's the childcare like?: volunteer parents for 0-3yrs(experience+love=greatness)and the best 3yrs+ children's church this side of Psalty's Songbook
What's your favorite thing?: we actually believe the gospel and work hard to create what God meant by community- we're not too proud to admit we have to have a big dose of grace to accomplish this
What would you change?: Our church is a historic (old) building that reminds us constantly that church isn't about coffee bars and bookstores (though those aren't necessarily bad) and that sometimes you have to pitch in to keep the physical and non-physical body of the church going. Oh, I guess I wouldn't change that. It's nice to be needed.

Another Plug for Austin Stone.

Favorite Thing: (As the associate pastor said last Sunday) "We are not a church that offers small groups, we are a bunch of small groups that come together to make a church." It is a place that has targeted the city of Austin, once one of the highest ranked "unchurched" cities in America and has committed to bring Christ to its people.

Its affect can be seen that this is the third post for Stone on a website that offers worldwide coverage.

What's the childcare like? Childcare provided for all ages at all services.

What's your favorite thing? the people; the teaching - does not gloss over hard truths, but addresses them and is challenging

What's the speaking like? (Old school Bible, culturally relevant, by video etc?) - Relevant, but in the style of a 50-something Baptist pastor.

What's the childcare like? Excellent - including check-in security. But not just childcare, it's an experience. There is a passion to help kids crave more of Christ. Innovative, we produce a sitcom for 1-6th graders to experience, puppets and animatronics for younger kids.

What's your favorite thing?
The sense of being in a small town, instead of a big church. It seems large, but you will always see someone you know. The building is used to its best efficiency, no corner is left unused for fellowship and connecting.

What would you change?

What's the speaking like? (Old school Bible, culturally relevant, by video etc?: Relevant - pastor is very passionate and energetic, tells great stories and really emphasizes his points well.

What's your favorite thing?: The fellowship you get each morning and the LifeGroups. There is a real effort to get members connected with the church and with each other.

What would you change? I might extend the coffee shop hours in the summer (yes, we have a coffee shop in the church). It's a great place to hold Bible studies, etc, but the hours are a bit limited right now.

What's the worship music like? Contemporary is SO relative now. We play what we like - LOUD. Guitars, real drums - fast, slow, authentic worship. Sit, stand, raise hands, drink coffee. How do YOU praise and worship?

What's the speaking like? Topical, RELEVANT, funny, engaging, less than an hour. Totally Bible-based.

What's the childcare like? {insert vague generic comment here "awesome"] check-in/check-out. WCKids has their own auditorium and setup with video-based curriculum, music, games, etc.... We meet in a theater so it's creative to say the least.

What's your favorite thing? We meet in a theater and are the UN-church in our community. We try to do as much as possible OUTSIDE of our walls (theater walls).

What would you change? Not change, ADD. It takes work to be a mobile church on purpose. We need more volunteers all the time.

Name of Church: Crossroads Bible Church

City: Double Oak, (Flower Mound, Highland Village area) TX

Worship music: Right now it changes a lot from week to week because we are searching for a worship pastor. But the guys filing in are doing a good job. We would be considered somewhat contemporary with a nod to the older hymns. We have two morning services (9:00 and 10:45) and a service at 5:00. The 5:00 service is billed as being more contemporary, but because there is no worship pastor, it is usually the same as the morning services.

Speaker: Teaching pastor is very good. Easy to listen to and his teaching applicable. He is also very people oriented. Loves to meet with people and is always looking for ways to reach people.

Childcare is excellent. Very secure, requiring picture ID to pick up kids. The children's minisitry is run by an outstanding woman who loves and is loved by our kids.

My favorite thing is the emphasis on God's grace. We are saved by grace and we grow by grace. You are welcome here...along with all the warts and cuts and bruises that we all have, and usually feel forced to hide.

What would I change? Right now we really need a worship pastor...but I have to trust God's timing on that one.

Can I wear jeans? Absolutely. Dress however you are comfortable and you will not stand out in the crowd.

What's the worship music like?: Since we're meeting this Saturday as a core group for the first time, I can't say for sure. But considering that most of the core team are musicians, sound techs and singers, I'm thinking it will be awesome.

What's the speaking like? Jeff is a story teller and a teacher. He'll always have a biblical truth as the focus of his lesson, and typically wrap that inside a series of good stories and observations. He's also very funny.

What's the childcare like? Hmmm, can't say for sure, yet.

What's your favorite thing?: That we are a missional, outwardly focused group of geeks, freaks and misfits that are trying to create a place where you feel welcome and not judged -- no matter where you are on your journey. All are welcome.

What would you change? I wish we had started sooner.

Can I wear jeans? Well, it's pretty hot right now. I would suggest shorts and a t-shirt.

What's the worship music like? (Contemporary, hymns, long, fast, loud etc?): Contemporary - we recently started rotating two bands, one a little more edgy than the other. Last weekend our student ministry worship band played in "big church" - it was awesome!

What's the speaking like? (Old school Bible, culturally relevant, by video etc?): Speaking is Bible based and culturally relevant. We alternate message series between spiritual growth oriented and life application oriented topics.

What's the childcare like?: staffed by loving volunteers, mostly parents - we meet in a high school so it gets pretty interesting when we have high attendance.

What's your favorite thing?: Pastor Brian is truly gifted in bringing the message of the Bible to people in a personal way. Also our student ministry.

What would you change? It would be great if we could afford to get some land and have our own building.

Can I wear jeans? Absolutely! The lead pastor often wears jeans and many people wear shorts (we are in Texas now). It is pretty common for a couple of members of the worship team to be barefoot...

What's the worship music like?
Acoustic-contemporary. Drummer, no fishbowl.

What's the speaking like?
Christ-centered, relevant, but not in a Rob Bell sort of way. Our pastor has been a missionary to Africa and planted churches in New York.

What's the childcare like?
Everyone at the church either has kids past the childcare age, or currently does not have kids.

What's your favorite thing?
That the church really does have community. The church is still pretty small, so everyone serves in some way. We also are beginning Berean courses.

What would you change?
Nothing

Can I wear jeans?
You can wear pretty much whatever you want.

What's the worship music like? (Contemporary, hymns, long, fast, loud etc?): The music is a great reflection of Austin, TX. It is not in any way traditional or what some many would classify "church contemporary." It's eclectic and varies in style, music that appeals to the 20-30 post-mod demographic.
What's the speaking like? (Old school Bible, culturally relevant, by video etc?): Culturally relevant, the type of place you'll feel comfortable bringing someone who's never been to church before, they'll probably like it, yet even seasoned church-goers will be challenged and inspired. The south campus is just the same, but the message is delivered by video.
What's the childcare like? Excellent! The kids building is themed with exciting environments and programming is exciting and engaging for the kids.
What's your favorite thing? The church is totally infused with the "weird" and unique culture of Austin. People truly come as they are... it's a diverse group. The slogan around here is "No perfect people allowed" and you see the freedom of that statement in the crowd and conversations here at Gateway.
What would you change? I haven't been here long enough to know... it's really pretty awesome!
Can I wear jeans? Absolutely, come as you are!

What's your favorite thing?
The church is full of people who would love this site. It's also incredibly service-oriented.

Cross Timbers Community Church

Argyle, TX - Denton, TX - Keller, TX

http://www.crosstimberschurch.org

Worship music is modern rock, mostly driven by electric guitars. It is excellent and we have some of the most talented and professional worship bands in the country.

The speaking is topical series based, relevant, creative, and fun. Lots of impressively creative video content is used every week. The teaching pastor is very down to earth and is an insanely effective communicator. We're somewhat of a leader in the multi-site church movement and broadcast our messages LIVE via satellite to multiple locations in high definition. We actually hosted a nationwide multi-site conference at our church a few months ago.

Childcare is very good and constantly improving.

My favorite thing is the authenticity of the church. Whether you were raised in church or a meth head off the street, you are genuinely welcome and loved like family. I love that we have ash trays at the front doors. I love that we're not a "churchy" religiously fake church. One of our slogans is "Welcome Home", and we mean it.

What would you change? Last year, according to Outreach magazine, we were the 21st fastest growing church in America. I wish we would grow even faster and reach more for Christ. AND I would change our website. It could be way better for the size of church we are.

Can I wear jeans? Jeans... You could wear a speedo if you want... Dress code really is a non-issue at Cross Timbers. No one even thinks twice about it.

What's the worship music like? Contemporary, rockin'

What's the speaking like? Culturally relevant, several video venues.

What's the childcare like? Several areas for infants, preschool, young grade school, older grade school. During every service.
Element Student Church for middle and high schoolers. Sunday services only.

What's your favorite thing? God has changed people's lives at this church, this is the first church I've gone to where God seemed real to the people.

What would you change? Bring back the donuts. Although you can still get coffee, juice, fruit and granola bars.

Can I wear jeans? Wear jeans. Shorts, visible tattoos, multiple piercings. Business casual is about as dressy as it gets for the adults. Kids in no way should wear their "Sunday best" whatever you'd wear to hang out on a Saturday will work best for the kiddos. In fact my children are quite confused when the school asks them to wear their Sunday best. We usually have to go shopping.

We have several services. We have traditional and contemporary. Both are done very well.

The sermon is exceptional. It is very relevant and very deep.

Childcare is probably one of the best anywhere. They just opened new facilities which are large and very well done. They have many workers and many things for children.

My favorite thing is actually two parts. I love our contemporary worship leader. He is very thoughtful in how he plans and leads worship. Also the pastor, Duane Brooks, is one of the best communicators I have known. (And I'm a minister).

What would you change? I'm not sure. We are about to open a new sanctuary and have just opened new education facility. I think all I would really change is the humidity in Houston!

Can I wear jeans? Yes, you can wear whatever you want. However, most people wearing jeans are in the contemporary services. You can wear jeans to the traditional services, but you personally must be prepared to be in a room with people wearing suits, etc. If you are fine with that then wear jeans to everything.

What's the worship music like? (Contemporary, hymns, long, fast, loud etc?):
Morning services are amazing- a full band (trumpets, saxophones, flutes, you name it!) and normally leans towards more hymns, but throws in some older contemporary music that kind of gets forgotten about as all the new stuff gets thrown in. (i.e., Shout to the Lord) The evening service is much more toned down, with just a guitar, a piano, drums and a violin. A lot of hymns, a lot of the same two Tomlin songs. but good nonetheless.

What's the speaking like? (Old school Bible, culturally relevant, by video etc?):
Speaking is solid. Tommy Nelson teaches in the morning service, and is one of the most excellent expositors of the Bible I've heard. He varies from preaching on series dealing with specific issues, to going through a book verse by verse. Definitely relevant. The evening services are taught by Shea Sumlin, who doesn't have the 'fame' that Tommy Nelson has, but he's just as solid and intentional in his preaching.

What's the childcare like?:
Amazing. DBC has such a huge children's ministry it's amazing. Since Denton is a college town, it's primary college students who are teaching- but don't worry parents, background checks are required for the college students!

What's your favorite thing?:
Ah. I love how missionally focused DBC is. They have so many outreach programs in the city, missions teams are constantly being sent out, the college ministry is massive, and the small groups are what bring it all together. Even though DBC is huge, I was welcomed with open arms the first time I stepped in the door.

What would you change?:
I was raised in a more charismatic church, so I definitely lean towards more freedom in worship. Denton Bible is a bit on the conservative side. I'm also not huge into picking sides on the Calvinism/Armenisim debate, and DBC states their position strongly, usually with a little poking at those who lean towards free-will.

Can I wear jeans?:
psh. yes. You will see everything from 3-piece suits to sweat pants.
No matter what you're wearing, DBC will welcome you.

Music: Saturday 6:00 - contemporary
Saturday 7:30 - contmeporary, more intimate
Sunday 8:00 - hymns
Sunday 9:30 & 11 - contemporary

Speaking: culturally relevant, innovative, sermon is very personal.

Childcare: Excellent, with driver's license check in. Huge children's ministry, understands that children are the future of the church.

Favorite thing: That it's about a relationship with Christ and not religion, decorations, children's ministry

What would I change?: I haven't found anything that I would change. Even though this is a "mega" church I've still found that it's very personal, you can be anonymous or you can get as involved as your comfortable with.

Jeans: Encouraged, it's a come-as-you-are kind of church. Lots of people wear shorts and t-shirts, but you can also dress up. Crowd is "dressier" on Sundays than on Saturdays.

What's the worship music like?
We have 2 services, the early service (8:15) that is very traditional with a few contemporary songs and the late service (or 2nd service depending on who you ask, starts at 11:00ish) is pretty contemporary with occasional hymns, but those are seldom. The music isn't too loud but it can get that way.
What's the speaking like?
The speaking is culturally relevant, but always tied back to the Bible.
What's the childcare like?
There is an excellent child care program for every age and a cry room. For visitors it does take a bit longer to check in children for child care just how the safety system works. All child care starts by at least the Sunday school hour (9:20ish) and continues until the end of late service. There are seperate pre-k (Oasis Nursery), elementary (Oasis Kidz), and youth (Fusion Student Ministries) programs.
What's your favorite thing? The church as a whole is very accepting of everyone. The group enjoys fellowshipping at and away from the church and there are plenty of ministries to serve in. The youth ministry is almost entirely student run, adult help, but all ideas and service involves students.
What would you change? The sound system and some small details in the in the youth ministry.
Can I wear jeans? Of course--I wouldn't reccomend a suit because of the weather, but you can wear one--just avoid the dirt parking lot.

Someone already posted about my church, but I'm going to post again and add stuff -- from a teens perspective also.

Name of church: Tallowood Baptist Church

City: Houston, TX

Website: tallowood.org

What's the worship music like?
Well, currently, there are two different styles of worship services (traditional and contemporary). The traditional is what it sounds like, traditional...hymns, big choir, big sanctuary. Mostly, the crowd is older people. The contemporary service contains all kinds of christian contemporary music. The worship leaders (Dave and Jess Ray) are amazing singers who often write some of their own songs, which are fabulous. It's complete with guitars, drums, and occasionally other instruments.

What's the speaking like?
The pastor, Duane Brooks, is a great speaker. He does a good job conveying the message well and in an exciting and entertaining way. He often inludes his life experiences in his sermons as examples, or includes news stories making it more relevant to today.

What's the childcare like?
They just completed a new children's area with a great new indoor and outdoor playground. The rooms are fabulous and super cute for the little ones. The childcare people are also very sweet and caring.

What's your favorite thing?
I really love that they have a LOT for the youth to do, from camps to mission trips to bible studies. I also really like that they offer many different sunday school classes.

What would you change?
There's a lot of construction going on around the building right now...so finish that! But other than that, it's pretty great.

Can I wear jeans?
A lot of people in the contemporary service often wear jeans. I wouldn't suggest going to the traditional service wearing jeans unless you're comfortable with everyone around you being dressed very nicely in suits.

What's the worship music like? (Contemporary, hymns, long, fast, loud etc?): All of the above, we have three different worship leaders, one only sings hymns, and two are everything else. (10:00am -10:40am)

What's the speaking like? (Old school Bible, culturally relevant, by video etc?) More old school, we have an older pastor. (11:00am - 12:00pm)

What's the childcare like? PERFECT! Well, okay, so nothing is perfect, but I guess I can say we're as close as it gets! The kids have worship time, game time, snack time, and an exciting lesson. (sign-in kids at 10:00, sign out kids at 12:00, or when service is finished). We also have infant and toddler care.

What's your favorite thing?
The location of the church, and the people there.
The church is on top of a mountain, with at least three miles of trails behind the church in a forest. We have a fishing pond, a volleyball court, and the "Summit", which is the building we have Children's church in, but can also be used as a conference center, or basically anything else.
The people are very nice, and accepting of newcomers, so you won't get a cold shoulder or a hard glare if you walk through the door late.

What would you change?
Preaching style in main service, and the volume of the music. It gets really, really loud.

Can I wear jeans?
Yes, you can wear whatever you want, just as long as you wear something! :)

What's the worship music like? Wonderful :)
We sing wonderful hymn settings, and some more contemporary songs that are musically excellent and have promise to stay around a while.
All three morning services use the pipe organ, piano, and on special occasions we have other instruments (like strings or harp). The choir is great and does many classical things as well as more modern songs. This is formal worship, as it is a liturgical church. We do readings, recite creeds, etc.

What's the speaking like?
Our pastoral staff preaches expositorily, from the Bible, and gives us clear messages about how we can glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

What's the childcare like?
I wouldn't know. No kids. But I'm sure it's great. They teach solid doctrine to the kids, too.

What's your favorite thing?
The emphasis on intellectual thinking. There are many Sunday School communities, and it's very community oriented. There are so many ways to serve at this church.

What would you change?
It's hard to break into the groups if you don't know anyone. I'd go with a friend the first time, or with your family.

Can I wear jeans?
Yes, but very few people do. This is a very traditional church where people attempt to give God our best in everything, including how we dress, our music, our worship, and our money. This isn't a casual church.

Name: Cross Timbers Community Church located in Argyle, Denton and Keller Texas.

Website: crosstimberschurch.org

Music: Contemporary; specialize in Hillsong and Chris Tomlin; mainly pop-ish

Speaking: Has three campuses. Argyle has no video and Keller, Argyle West and Denton do have video. There's a main pastor who does this by video, but there are seprate pastors for every building that work under the main pastor.

Take chapters from books of the Bible, break them down, then apply to life.

Childcare: Children are to have nametag with them so that teacher can identify them. During class, all the kids gather in a room seprate from their original assigned rooms. four to five years old go with kindergarteners and three to four go with twos. So don't worry about the older kids and bullying and all that. Just like adults, they have what they call 'big church' in that room. They sing songs and get silly and watch puppet shows. I know this because I've volunteered and even I was enjoying the 'big church'.

They go back the their rooms and have a Bible story and play a game as a class.

When you sign them out, you give them your security number that's printed on a tag. This is given to you when you first sign in. The child's number should have the same number as you or the child doesn't leave.

Fav Thing: The Music. Free Donuts (Krispy Kreme). Their outreach to the community. The fact that they care about your needs and take surveys about your intrests and stuff, they really care about you and they don't just say that and then blow you off.

What I Change: NOTHING!!! :)

Jeans: You'd be wierd if you didn't wear them!! Even the pastor wears them!! :)

What would you change? It would be nice if the pastor was there in person every Sunday rather than via video, but we love him anyway.

Can I wear jeans? Yes! Most of us do! :)

What's the worship like?
We have an old-school service that starts at 8:30 which sadly I haven't gone too (I love hymns and classic Christian songs) and a contemporary service at 11 which is a mixture of some songs from the 90s and well as more recent songs from Chris Tomlin, etc.

What's the childcare like?
I'm afraid I cannot comment on the childcare because I don't have any children, but it is aimed more at younger children, birth through 6th grade.

What's your favorite thing?
I love our pastor, Jim Johnson. I regularly have a belly laugh during his sermons. But as important as humor is, his sermons regularly challenge me to do something. He also tries very hard to give us some sort of application for his messages so that we can begin to apply what we learn.

What would you change?
I personally would like to not have split services. Maybe this is an unrealistic goal, but I feel like it artificially and unnecessarily splits the congregation. If we simply had two services of the same kind of worship, we could get out of the rut that 'we can only worship in a certain way.'

Can I wear jeans?
Let me start off by saying that our pastor not only plays in the worship band, but he plays electric guitar (and plays some sweet solos!). He also wears jeans. So yes, you can wear jeans. I do every Sunday with a polo shirt, and that almost counts as over-dressed.
