My husband and I live in Japan and we have been here for a while and haven't found a church that isn't....hmmm, not really sure how to write the next sentence....well, isn't "focused" on growing THEIR church but rather growing the church in Japan and has some solid teaching, I would love to know. We live in Tokyo. Near Shibuya.
I used to live in Tokyo, also near Shibuya, about 15 years ago. I was working at a very small Japanese church in Sasazuka. That congregation is now lead by a very energetic, charismatic-style pastor who follows Korean churches the way North American churches follow WillowCreek or Saddleback. It's on Koshukaido near the train station across from the dry cleaner's shop.
I also went to the multi-lingual evening service at Shibuya Harvest, but I've heard that they've moved to a different location - maybe near Gotanda? That was a Christian Missionary Alliance church with lots of energy and the congregation was a mix of ex-pats from around the world and locals.
Another church I can recommend if you're looking for one with English is "International Community Church of Saitama" (www.iccs-japan.com). It's out in Tokorozawa, but the pastor there is excellent. He can probably also tell you where Shibuya Harvest has moved since he used to (and may still) preach there on a regular basis.
Hope this helps,
God Bless!
