Emmanuel Baptist Church
Xenia, Ohio
http://www.ebcxenia.org

The worship music is pretty varied during our morning service, everything from straight up hymns and organ to full band contemporary stuff. No electric guitars, though (yet).

Our sermons our preached by a team of guys, each with his own flavor. Again variety is the key word. Typically more topical than exegetical, but always Bible-based and always relevant.

The downside of the variety is that it can be tough to get into a rhythm. But that's not necessarily a bad thing (we avoid ruts), so I don't think I'd change it.

Childcare is pretty standard fare, I suppose. Nursery through 5th grade "children's church" and Sunday School for everyone.

I really appreciate that we go out of our way to be honest and transparent with each other. We're also really working to connect with other churches in town.

You can definitely wear jeans. I wear them on stage from time to time.

What's the speaking like? Stinkin' good - Pastor Carlos is wise beyond his years, relevant and you won't fall asleep - I promise
What's the childcare like? excellent as far as I know - my kids are older and I only have one in kids church - he seems to enjoy it.
What's your favorite thing? All of the above. Solid Rock is a real church with real people - no pretenses and no pretending. It is multicultural - which is one of my favorite aspects.
What would you change? Nothing - I like it just the way it is.
Can I wear jeans? YES YES YES - Actually this past Sunday - the Pastor wore jeans, flip flops and a shirt NOT tucked in - oh - and sang a rap song. It doesn't get better than that.

Name of church: Scranton Road Bible Church
City: Cleveland, Ohio (near West Side)
Website: http://scrantonroad.com/
What's the worship music like? 1/2 contemporary & gospel (with worship band and powerpoint), 1/2 hymns (with pianist & hymnals). The worship band is diverse in age and race, and the music reflects that.
What's the speaking like? Gospel oriented, with an emphasis on reconciliation (relational, racial, etc) and justice in the city, without venturing into politics.
What's the childcare like? Children can attend Junior Church (dismissed after the songs) or stay with parents. Nursery is available for infants, and a section in the back is reserved for parents with small children.
What's your favorite thing? The community is very welcoming towards people from different walks of life (e.g. differing socioecon status, mental retardation or illness, previous incarceration, same sex attraction) without diluting biblical teaching on sin and repentance (not "open and affirming").
What would you change? Organization is sometimes a bit lacking.
Can I wear jeans? Absolutely -- "Come as you are". Wear what you would be comfortable wearing to church. Some wear suits, some jeans. Most men wear polo/collar shirt/sweater with slacks)

**Disclaimer** The following is not a "church" by traditional definition, but a group of Christians struggling to figure out how to follow God in America

- Central Ohio Emergent Cohort
- Columbus, Ohio
-http://emergentcentralohio.blogspot.com
- We do our own music (and most weeks we usually just have a discussion) so it's fairly simple...usually acoustic guitar, and sometimes CD's
- Everyone shares theirs thoughts, opinions, questions, dreams, hopes, fears and beliefs; it's very open and we strive to be accepting, but secretly judge people on the side
- I will personally care for your child (while continuing to be a part of the discussion)
- Everyone is free to be themselves; we are genuinely friends and love to meet new people; it is very much not like "church"
- Yes, denim is permitted

Wellspring Community Church
West Chester, OH
www.wellspringonline.org
What's the worship music like? Contemporary, can be loud, but always high quality and passionate. Worship team likes to mix it up with secular songs that fit the topic...one Sunday they did the Seal song "Crazy."
What's the speaking like? Pastor is an excellent teacher, digs into the Scripture, but brings it down to everyday living so you always have practical ideas on how to live out what was taught. Very honest, brave, and willing to tackle the tough stuff.
What's the childcare like?
My daughter is only 2 so all I have experience with is the nursery...but they take good care of her and she's starting to actually like it which is a big deal for her! They are very kid-friendly and family-focused though so I'm sure the rest of the kids' classes are great too.
What's your favorite thing?
We are pretty new to this church after relocating from Michigan and we stayed at Wellspring, first of all, because the people are so warm and welcoming and make a point to remember your name. Secondly was the teaching. It's engaging, challenging, and never boring! It's also a very mission-focused church which is awesome.
What would you change?
I think I'm too new to see what needs to be changed yet!
Can I wear jeans?
Absolutely! Come as you are!

Marion First Church of the Nazarene
Marion, Ohio
www.mfcn.org (don't judge by the website...we're working on a new one.)
Identical services at 8:30 and 10:45 with sunday school in between.
Music: pretty contemporary, guitar-driven, also a choir that sings weekly
Speaking: to the point and easy to understand, no-nonsense
Children: well organized nurseries for small kids, and high-energy, interactive ministry for older kids
Teens: relaxed youth group. they have their big events other times besides sunday mornings.
I Like: the good mix of young and old people worshipping together.
I Would Change: the second service is pretty crowded. come a little early if you don't want to have to sit in the balcony, or go to the 8:30 service.
Jeans: some people wear jeans, some people wear suits, lots of younger peeps wear shorts. people on stage don't wear jeans.

*Mt. Zion Church

*We have three different services. Saturday night is very casual. Then on Sunday we have a traditional service which has hymns and a choir. We also have a traditional service which has an amazing worship band. You can wear jeans to all services but most people attending the traditional service wear dresses/suits/ect. We have an amazing cafe that has fantastic coffee(I'm a big coffee drinker) and it's a great place to fellowship before/after/between services.
*We have an amazing kids program!(I'm a leader) We have a room for every age. We also have an amazing youth program. God is really working with the youth and speaking to them in amazing ways.
*My favorite thing is the family atmosphere. It's a rather small church, only about 350 to 400 people. I also like how our church really is Bible based. We are tryin to follow God's will and hope you will join us.
*What would I change? Um, well, my family is involved in ministry which makes things very different for us. So I hate to say what I would change because my views are all biased because we have been hurt and I would change the things that have hurt us...does that make sense???
*You can absolutely wear jeans. You can really wear anything you want to any of the services.

The Epic Worship Band does a mix of contemporary, hymmns and their own original music.
Kids Church is super fun invlolving a live worship band, puppets, age-appropriate teaching with take home lessons and playtime.
FUSE for Junior high students. EPIC is for high school, college and young adults and is a movement of God for sure. It has grown from 50 to 500 students in just 1 year.
Our pastor preaches from the word and is both encouraging and straight forward about how God wants us to live.
I would make it easier to find out what's happening at the church. Information can be hard to come by.
Jeans are quite popular. Pastor wears them for Saturday night service.
My favorite thing is EPIC! The young adults make up about 1/3 of the church, they love Jesus and are ready and willing to serve Him! And we love meeting new people!

***note: we're a church that meets on the Ohio State campus & is composed mainly of college students & recent grads

Name of church
--newLife-osu

City
--Columbus, OH

Website

What's the worship music like?
--Contemporary (though sometimes we throw out a unicorn hymn or two -- see SCL #250); can be loud w/ full band one week, acoustic the next. we like to change it up.

What's the speaking like?
--Culturally relevant with a nod to old school. we usually have a recurrent theme for every quarter (ex. one quarter we went through proverbs, another we focused on what it means to be a servant, etc.). so depending on the current theme, sermons can be topical or exegetical.

What's the childcare like?
-there's not really any. we're a college ministry, so there aren't many children. i think we have 2 right now.

What's your favorite thing?
-it's small & a really intimate & close-knit community. i know almost everyone by name, and so does our whole staff. close personal relationships and one-on-one discipleship are a big focus of what we do.

What would you change?
--you have to pay for parking (we meet in a college class building so the only available parking is a garage owned by the school. but most people live close enough to walk so it's not too big of an issue).

Can I wear jeans?
--yes, everybody wears jeans, even our pastor. you can dress up if you want, too, though if you show up in a 3-piece suit you might stick out a bit =]

What's the worship music like?: I think its pretty eclectic. The worship band is rather small, and there is always a great mix of hymns, contemporary, fast and slow. I think one time one the members even sang a song she had written herself.
What's the speaking like? Wow, um. I think it's culturally relevant? I'm not sure what you'd call it lol. I mean, the Pastor is really affable and easy to understand. Very easy to follow. Interesting.
What's the childcare like?: Birth - age 3. Children's church for ages 4-11 on Sundays
What's your favorite thing?: The people. Everyone is so warm, friendly, and genuinely cares about me. I am a relatively new member, and I've never felt more included or cared about.
What would you change? Nothing, at the moment.
Can I wear jeans? YES! It is a very eclectic church. You will find everyone from ages 97-0, college kids and blue collar workers. Suits to jeans, its all welcome.

PLUS, we have some DELICIOUS coffee and someone always bakes something scrumptious. Visitors get a bag full of chocolate (come on, you know you want chocolate ;) )
