We have two services: one traditional, one contemporary.
The speaking is very, very relevant to daily life.
Childcare is only provided in the contemporary service.
Our emphasis on technology and web ministry.
I would change the size of our church from smaller to bigger.
Yes...you can definitely wear jeans. The Pastor always wears Hawaiian shirts!

Prairie Lakes Church

Worship is contemporary and is played by skilled musicians. Expect new songs, drums, electric guitar and bass. Also, don't be surprised to see an old favorite hymn done in a fresh way.

Speaking is relevant and unapologetic. Geared towards men-- Our head pastor was a college football player who radically found Jesus.

Childcare is taken very seriously. It is not seen as a baby-sitting service but rather an intense ministry driven event. (Don't drop your kids off late, they'll miss something great).

My favorite thing is the honesty and realness. Be who you are. Expect to see anything from leather-clad motorcyclists to a state senator in a handsome suit.

I would change my church to be even more aggressive in college ministry.

Absolutely wear jeans. Flip-flops are welcome.

Imago Christi at Central Park
Cedar Rapids
www.imagochristicp.org

We meet Saturday nights in an old Presbyterian church building near two colleges in downtown Cedar Rapids. We just began meeting in January 2008.

Music: not a big worship team yet, expect a 3 or 4-piece acoustic group, mixing new songs with new settings of old hymns.

Wear whatever you're comfortable in - jeans, shorts, flip flops, whatever. Just come.

We have a very laid back worship service. We normally start by mingling around and eating some fabulous pastry made by a super mom or some donuts picked up at the local gas station by the guy who forgot it was his week to bring treats.

We then normally sing a few songs. Some are slow, some fast and most are contemporary in style, (the lyrics may be a few hundred or thousand years old though), and then try and shake hands with as many people as possible.

Our pastor is a great guy who just teaches the Bible. We try and make the service and message interesting and relevant through a variety of means like video, drama, and personal stories.

We have classes during the service for ages birth - 1st grade. We also have a "Bible hour" also known as "Sunday School" for every age before the service.

My favorite thing is the people who are here. It sounds cliche, but this is a place where people are comfortable to be real. We talk about sin and don't pretend it doesn't exist

You can wear jeans anytime you wish, though remember, you're in Iowa.

Nov - April = snow-suits.
June - September = shorts.

So that leaves June and October for the blue beauties.

Come and visit or just ask a question.

church name: Two Rivers Church

location: ICA, West Des Moines

website: www.2rc.org

worship: electic, mostly contemporary--although our music leader would cringe at that term

speaking: culturally relevant

childcare: the kids are starting to outnumber the adults, so we take our children's ministry very seriously. it is lead by a team of awesome women--all with a teaching background. we have cirriculum & activities for the kiddos...young & old-ish.

favorite thing:that we have a heart to do what the bible really says to do. our main gig is helping out in one of the poorest communities in DSM, the Bates Park neighborhood. if you are looking to love on some people that need Jesus, TRC might be the place for you.

what would you change?: nothing--every challenge that comes our way is a chance to grow. our church isn't perfect, it is in progress.

can you wear jeans?: i think you'd get made fun of from the front if you dressed up. our pastor claims to have the spiritual gift of being a sarcasm. seriously, come as you are...if you enjoy dressing in your sunday best, then do it. if you want to come in sweatpants, do it--Lord knows, Jon does!

First Reformed Church
Pella
http://frcpella.org/index.html

2 services--one 'formal' and one 'informal'. At the formal one music is pretty much all hymns and organ...the informal service is much more up beat. We have a praise band complete with 2 drummers, bass, keyboard, and acoustic. Many new songs and oldies but goodies.

Speaking is also different at both services. I attend the informal one so that's what I know most about... It is very much life applicable. Some days are history lessons, some are very interactive, it is different every week.

There is a toddler and baby nursery for each service. At the informal service you will find some kids [dinky dudes as our pastor puts it :)].

I absolutely love it! The church family is very friendly and welcoming. The message really relates to my life pretty much every week.

If I could change anything...well there is a lot of different opinions that go on in our church. Stupid stuff like the lay out of the sanctuary to the use of the organ and drums...but when Sunday rolls around we seem to put that beside for the most part...

Honestly to the 'informal' service you can wear whatever you want. you'll find very few in anything but jeans. To the 'formal' service you will find less in jeans but there will still be some.

Amen to Prairie Lakes in CF. I'm not a member, I'm simply a "lurker" (you can't have too many churches), so I can only "Amen" to the pastor and how I always feel a warm welcome in even my grungiest jeans. Sermons are culturally relevant, sometimes raw, with uncanny timing and purpose. Music rocks.

What's the worship music like?--Contemporary if this is 1990. Hymns are also sung. (Contemporary, hymns, long, fast, loud etc?)
What's the speaking like? Bible based, relevant and challenging
What's the childcare like? there is a nursery for babies and children's church for 4yo through 5th grade
What's your favorite thing? That the pastor and the congregation love the Lord. There is a youth program that has made a difference in the lives of my teenaged children. Even my adult daughter, who is not involved in church due to some negative experiences in a former church, feels welcome and cared for in this body of believers.
What would you change?--Nothing
Can I wear jeans? -- yes

Church of the Living Water
Muscatine
www.livingwatermuscatine.com

10:15am Sundays

Worship is a modern light rock style, with piano, guitar, drums, bass, and keyboard.

Speaking: Usually practical, yet also often theological - our pastor studies Greek and often pulls out fresh insights from the Bible. He likes to use video clips to make points.

The nursery is near to the sanctuary so you never have to be far away. There's also children's church every week during the sermon.

My favorite thing is the friendliness of the people and the informality.

I would change the service time from 10:15 to 11:00am.

Jeans? Yes! Lots of us wear jeans.

Cornerstone Church of Ames
Ames, IA

http://www.cornerstonelife.com/

The worship consists almost entirely of contemporary worship. There is a lot of Hillsong, but there is also an extremely talented group of musicians/song writers who have been anointed with an amazing gift to write worship songs.

Cornerstone will usually go through a book of the bible, going over a chapter or short passage each week as they work their way through. Currently, there are 5 services (One Saturday night at 5:30, then Sunday at 9:00, 9:15, 11:00, and 11:15) but they are building a new auditorium that will cut down to three services. Also, the 9:00 and 11:00 services are video of the Saturday night sermon, with a live worship team.

Cornerstone has an amazing children's program called D6 (after Deuteronomy 6) that goes from nursery all the way up through 6th grade. There is also a great middle school ministry, high school ministry, and one of the best college ministries around. The college ministry is called The Salt Company and could have an entire post of its own. It is incredibly relevant and life changing. http://www.saltcompany.com/

My favorite thing is the authenticity of the Pastors and Elders. They all have an incredible heart for what they're doing and have had an awesome anointing from God. Also, Cornerstone offers amazing classes for whatever stage of life you're in, including an old testament class, a new testament theology class, financial peace university, Perspectives, etc...

A lot of the people at Cornerstone are financially well off, and what I would change (not really change, but keep an eye out for) is to make sure people feel welcomed no matter what walk of life they come from.

And yes, go for it. Wear jeans.

Calvary Church
Muscatine, IA

Our worship is primarily rock and roll based with influences from the blues, jazz, funk, and folk. We also have weekends on an occasional basis with more of a country or bluegrass feel.

The teaching time is often like a bible study on topics relevant to living life today.

For children, we have KidzTown with a secure check-in system. You can be sure your kids are safe in a loving and caring environment having fun and learning about Jesus.

My favorite part of Calvary is all of the friendships that I have developed over the 10 years I have been here and meeting more people.

I think we could do better at helping people find and take the next steps on their journey through life.

Not only can you wear jeans, but you can wear cutoffs and flip-flops if you wish. Come as you are!

The Downtown Church
Des Moines
http://www.thedtc.org/

Contemporary, rock worship. Music like Hillsong United, Phil Wickham, and Chris Tomlin. Loud, some fast, some slow.

Speaking is very age and culturally relevant. The church is fairly young population-wise. Most of the membership is college-early 30's, so the sermons are focused on those ages. It meets Saturday nights and Sunday mornings, with Saturday being the much more attended service.

Nursery is available and fun for the kids.

My favorite thing is that everyone is very welcoming. It's a laid back, almost hipster church that's great if you want to connect with other young adults. They are focused on building intimate relationships instead of becoming a megachurch with no real connections.

I would move it to Iowa City so I could still attend while I'm in college!

You can absolutely wear jeans - it's practically the dress code for a lot of people!
